The words
Lyrics
Morning finds me by an open door,
No road chosen for me anymore.
The sky is wide, the day is undefined,
And every step ahead of me is mine.
I hear my name, no orders fill the air,
Telling me what to love or what to fear.
I take a breath and let the moment be-
The world is waiting, and it waits for me.
I thought freedom would be standing alone,
With nothing left to carry or hold.
But now I know what freedom can be-
The right to choose what matters to me.
I am free
To speak with my own voice,
Free to believe,
Free to make my choice.
Free to give my heart
And still know who I am,
Free to build tomorrow
With these open hands.
I am free
To follow what is true,
Free to become
Someone honest, someone new.
No life written for me,
No limit on what I can be-
I’m alive, I can choose,
I am free.
I see the colors rising on the walls,
Where children paint across the scars we caused.
I hear a song come through an open room,
A simple sound where silence used to rule.
And there you stand beneath the warming sun,
Not who they named you, not what you had done.
I take your hand because I want you near-
Not out of need, not out of guilt or fear.
I thought freedom meant I answered to none,
That every bond would have to be undone.
But now I know it’s more than standing free-
It’s choosing who I’m finally meant to be.
I am free
To speak with my own voice,
Free to believe,
Free to make my choice.
Free to give my heart
And still know who I am,
Free to build tomorrow
With these open hands.
I am free
To follow what is true,
Free to become
Someone honest, someone new.
No life written for me,
No limit on what I can be-
I’m alive, I can choose,
I am free.
I can ask the questions no one answers,
I can change the road I’m walking on.
I can face the person I once was
And know that I am not forever gone.
Your freedom does not take away from mine,
Your voice does not erase my own.
We can disagree and still remember
No human heart was made to be controlled.
So let the doors stay open.
Let every honest voice be heard.
Let our children choose their future.
Let no one own another’s worth.
We did not rise to rule each other.
We did not heal to live divided.
We are more than what we suffered.
We are human.
We decide.
We are free
To speak with our own voice,
Free to believe,
Free to make our choice.
Free to give our hearts
And still know who we are,
Free to walk together
Without hiding any scars.
We are free
To follow what is true,
Free to become
Something brighter, something new.
No lives written for us,
No limit on what we can be-
We’re alive, we can choose,
We are free.
